Nine runners have been confirmed to line up for Saturday’s featured Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) at Doomben Racecourse; offering punters exceptional value from a betting standpoint and several key opportunities to place a winning wager.
Fell Swoop remains clear $1.60 in 2016 Victory Stakes betting markets with Ladbrokes.com.au ahead of Artlee and Knoydart; currently tied on the second line of betting at generous $6 quotes.
Will Fell Swoop justify favouritism and win the 2016 Victory Stakes or will one of his talented rivals post a big upset?
Fell Swoop ($1.60)
Fell Swoop has returned to racing in scintillating form this time and frankly, should have far too much class not to win the 2016 Victory Stakes. Ending a standout 2015 campaign with consecutive black type wins, Fell Swoop resumed this time as a double-figure odds chance in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) but savaged the line for a second behind Flamberge in a photo. Progressing to fourth in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m), the Not A Single Doubt gelding has reportedly taken great benefit from a brief freshen-up following his second-place finish behind Chautauqua in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) on Day 1 of The Championships. Fell Swoop meets the 2016 Victory Stakes field at even weights and will leave from the ideal barrier 2.
Godolphin runner Knoydart is a proven performer at the grade, over the distance and at the track and is sure to lay a great account for himself in the Victory Stakes. Running fourth in last year’s edition of the Group 2 feature, Knoydart progressed to a close second behind Hot Snitzel in the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) before again finishing fourth in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) most notably. Having run a close second in the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) a fortnight ago, Knoydart could very well receive the run of the race on Saturday from barrier 3.
The Tony Gollan-trained Fontelina is reportedly a picture of health in the lead-up to his competitive return this weekend and is undoubtedly over the Victory Stakes odds at a current quote of $19 for success or $3.80 to finish in the first three. Unlucky to have finished second in Group 1 feature races on several occasions, Fontelina produced a number of typically smart performances in his first preparation for Gollan in late spring and summer, highlighted by success in the Listed Lough Neagh Stakes (1350m) on December 12th.
