Srikandi Primed for 2015 Victory Stakes Return

April 24th, 2015

Talented mare Srikandi was one of the standout performers of the 2015 Brisbane Winter Carnival and has reportedly taken huge benefit from her 11 months in the paddock leading up to Saturday’s Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) on the Gold Coast.

Yet to finish outside the places through her eight career starts to date, Srikandi more than came into her own upon arriving in Queensland last year; taking out each of the Listed Silk Stocking (1200m), Listed Juanmo Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m) on her way to third in the featured Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m).

Confirming the Stradbroke Handicap, to be contested over the 1350m course at Doomben this season will again figure as her major target, trainer Ciaron Maher told Racing Ahead he would have liked a sturdier track for the Dubawi mare’s final hit-out at Rosehill on Tuesday morning but is confident she is more than capable of 2015 Victory Stakes success first-up.

“She doesn’t really have to improve on what she did last year but physically she’s improved and I can’t wait to get her to the races and see what she can do,” Maher said.

“She’s been in work a while and she’s had a nice smooth campaign. She’s had a few jumpouts and trials and seems to have travelled up there in good order.

“She’s good but I probably would have liked to have done a little more with her at Rosehill Tuesday but they had a downpour and she didn’t do quite as much work as I would have liked.

“I thought she would be improved by the run anyway; she hasn’t raced for a while and she’s a big and strong mare now.

“She’s pretty fast out of the barriers and puts herself right there so I wouldn’t imagine she’ll be too far away.”

Allocated the ideal barrier 1 and confirmed to be partnered by leading Queensland-based jockey Damien Browne, Srikandi is currently rated a tied favourite in 2015 Victory Stakes betting markets alongside Ball Of Muscle and Knoydart with leading online bookie
