While sure to take valuable condition from his racing return at Doomben a fortnight ago, trainer Gerald Ryan does not rate the chances of Dances On Stars in Saturday’s Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) on the Gold Coast.
Jumping from the gates only fairly in the Listed Chief De Beers Stakes (1110m) on April 11th, jockey Paul Hammersley was forced to settled Dances On Stars off the pace of the race’s early leaders and was unable to make up ground in the final straight, finishing eighth.
Pleased with the way the son of Snitzel hit the line regardless of the result, Ryan cited the talent rich field confirmed for the 2015 Victory Stakes as a huge task and is confident he will find peak condition further into the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
“He ran up there a fortnight ago in an 1100 metre race and he hit the line good,” Ryan told Sky Racing HQ.
“I was hoping that he would take enough benefit out of it to go to the Prime Minister’s Cup which he won last year, but from the way that he pulled up yesterday he wasn’t quite ready to go to 1400 with a big weight on his back.
“We will run around in the Victory Stakes and I don’t think he can win that, but we will find another race for him later in the Carnival.
“It is a very good race.”
Posting four wins and a further seven minor place finishes through his 27 career starts so far, Dances On Stars undoubtedly found career-best form to date through his 2014 racing campaign; winning the Listed Carrington Stakes (1100m) first-up before finishing a close second to Emblems in the Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m).
Continuing to impress through autumn before returning to the winner’s circle in the Listed Prime Minister’s Cup (1300m), the gelding out of Starnet has been confirmed to be partnered by Brenton Avdulla, will leave from the ideal barrier 5 and is currently available at 2015 Victory Stakes odds of $31 for success with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
