Temple Of Boom Leads 2015 Victory Stakes Field

April 22nd, 2015

Tony Gollan’s defending champ Temple Of Boom will look to join the likes of Buffering and Swiss Ace when he shoots for another win in the Victory Stakes 2015 this weekend to kick off his Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

Twelve months ago the now eight-year-old son of Piccolo scored an upset as a 40/1 shot when the $200,000 Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) run in Brisbane, and now he’ll look to win again when the sprint feature takes place at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

He is first-up for the season after being outclassed running 12th to Terravista in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) in Melbourne last November, and out to add his name to the multiple Victory Stakes winners’ list alongside the likes of Buffering (2011/13) and Swiss Ace (2008/9).

This year Gollan will also saddle up the also-resuming Alma’s Fury who Jim Byrne rides along with the in-form Rocket To Glory who shots for his third straight win.

Luke Tarrant replaces Tegan Harrison, on Group 1 The Galaxy winner Temple Of Boom on the weekend, in the saddle of Gollan’s Shovhog six-year-old Rocket To Glory who backed up from his second win over the 1200m on the Gold Coast in March to win Doomben’s Listed Chief De Beers Handicap (1100m) last start.

After a seventh in this race last year, the Natalie McCall-trained Sunshine Coast galloper River Lad went on to win the $2 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1200m) defeating Temple Of Boom two runs later.

On Saturday the seven-year-old Top Echelon gelding takes on Temple Of Boom once again, also resuming in the Victory Stakes ahead of another Stradbroke Handicap campaign this winter.

Drawn a treat with barrier one meanwhile is the sole mare taking on the boys in the Victory Stakes this year, the Ciaron Maher-trained Srikandi ridden by Damian Browne from the inside.

A winner of six of her eight starts to date, Dubawi four-year-old Srikandi has won all four of her previous runs over the 1200m and returns to racing here not having run since her brave third in the Stradbroke Handicap last June.

Other noteworthy Victory Stakes acceptors this year include the John O’Shea-trained Knoydart in gate two for Hugh Bowman, Kelly Schweida’s Chief De Beers Handicap runner-up Cape Kidnappers, and the flying Ball Of Muscle for Sydney’s Joe Pride who resumed with a second at Flemington last start and is undefeated second-up (3-3-0-0).

The official 2015 Victory Stakes field and barrier draw can be found in the table below, odds on the sprint showdown to be released shortly at Ladbrokes.com.au making now the time to sign-up with the country’s leading online sportsbook!
