Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan will shoot for back-to-back wins in Saturday’s Victory Stakes 2015 at the Gold Coast with a four-horse contingent led by the defending champ Temple Of Boom.
Twelve months ago leading up to last year’s Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, Gollan’s Piccolo gelding Temple Of Boom enjoyed an upset win in the $200,000 Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) as a $40 roughie at Eagle Farm with Tegan Harrison in the saddle.
He went on to enjoy two Group 1 seconds firstly behind stablemate Spirit Of Boom in the Doomben 10,000 and then River Lad in Queensland’s richest race – the Stradbroke Handicap.
This season the Victory Stakes runs back at the Gold Coast Racecourse on AD Hollindale Stakes Day, and Temple Of Boom is back to defend his title first-up having last been seen running 12th of 13 runners in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) at Flemington during the spring.
Nominations for the Victory Stakes are extended until 9am (AEST) on Tuesday with 15 current entries for the weight-for-age sprint.
Along with Temple Of Boom another three of those 15 come from Gollan’s stables.
Gollan’s other hopefuls at this stage are Alma’s Fury, and the last start Chief De Beers Handicap quinella of Rocket To Glory and Whiskey Allround.
Rocket To Glory shoots for his third on the trot this weekend having also enjoyed a win at this track and distance before the Brisbane black-type last time out, while Whiskey Allround is out to turn the tables on his stablemate.
Third past the post in the Listed Chief De Beers, the Kelly Schweida-trained Cape Kidnappers is also entered for the Victory Stakes rematch.
The Victory Stakes is obviously a key lead-up for sprinters heading towards the $2 million Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) at Doomben on June 6 in Brisbane, and last year’s Straddie trifecta are all entered for the weekend’s showdown.
Along with second placed Temple Of Boom, the Victory Stakes nominations this year feature the reigning Stradbroke Handicap winner River Lad and third past the post Srikandi.
River Lad represents the Sunshine Coast’s Natalie McCall and hasn’t raced since a disappointing 11th when failing to run out the mile in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) during November’s Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Ciaron Maher meanwhile prepares Caulfield-based mare Srikandi who won the Silk Stocking at the Gold Coast last May and shoots for her fifth win from as many starts over the 1200m this weekend at a track and distance she’s proven over.
